COMPUTER BASICS

Cloud computing describes computation, software, data access, and storage services that do not require end-user knowledge of the physical location and configuration of the system that delivers the services. Parallels to this concept can be drawn with the electricity grid where end-users consume power resources without any necessary understanding of the component devices in the grid required to provide said service.
Cloud computing is a natural evolution of the widespread adoption of virtualizationservice-oriented architectureautonomic and utility computing. Details are abstracted from end-users, who no longer have need for expertise in, or control over, the technology infrastructure "in the cloud" that supports them.[1]
Cloud computing describes a new supplement, consumption, and delivery model for IT services based on Internet protocols, and it typically involves provisioning of dynamically scalableand often virtualized resources.[2][3] It is a byproduct and consequence of the ease-of-access to remote computing sites provided by the Internet.[4] This frequently takes the form of web-based tools or applications that users can access and use through a web browser as if it were a program installed locally on their own computer.[5]

Introductory Reading For Being a Leader and The Effective Exercise of Leadership: An Ontological Model
Executive Summary:

Effective leadership does not come from mere knowledge about what successful leaders do; or from trying to emulate the characteristics or styles of noteworthy leaders; or from trying to remember and follow the steps, tips, or techniques from books or coaching on leadership. And it certainly does not come from merely being in a leadership position or in a position of authority or having decision rights. This paper, the sixth of six pre-course reading assignments for an experimental leadership course developed by HBS professor emeritus Michael C. Jensen and coauthors, accompanies a course specifically designed to provide actionable access to being a leader and the effective exercise of leadership as one's natural self-expression. Key concepts include:
One of the conditions for realizing the promise of the leadership course is that students must be open to examine, question, and then transform their worldviews (models of reality) and frames of reference (mindsets).
Students create for themselves a powerful 4-part contextual framework that calls them into being as a leader. Having done this what remains is to confront one's own Ontological Perceptual and Functional constraints so as: 1) to relax their ability to restrict one's perceptions of what must be dealt with in any leadership situation, and 2) to relax their ability to restrict one's freedom of choice for action in any leadership situation.
Students cannot master that which they do not create for themselves. This is especially true of anything that is at first counterintuitive.

In an effort to make the restrictive country even less free, Iran has announced the formation of a "cyber police force."
Gen. Ismail Ahmadi Moghaddam, Iran's top police chief, said on state television Sunday that the Web has become an access point for spying, The Associated Press reported. Iran already has a cyber-crimes task force, set up in 2009.

But the new cyber police "can prevent espionage and sabotage in Information Technology tools," Gen. Seyed Kamal Hadianfar, head of the police information production and exchange department, told FARS NewsMany Iran observers believe the force is a reaction to the important part the Internet played during the unrest following the disputed 2009 presidential election. The news also comes after a Stuxnet computer virus infiltrated the country's nuclear program.

Tehran's Public and Revolutionary Court even announced that the formation was a reaction to aid the U.S. gave to protesters and "anti-Islamic republic groups" with anti-filtering software. Gen. Moghaddam announced that Tehran will be an initial focal point for the Web patrols and that by 2012, Web cops will be in every police station.

Vatican wary of Confession: A Roman Catholic app; says iPhones, iPads can't replace confessionals

Confess to your iPad? Not so fast, says theVatican.
Officials in Rome have declared that an app available on Apple's iPhones, iPads and the iPod touch cannot serve as a confessional. "One cannot speak in any way of confessing via iPhone," Federico Lombardi, the Vatican's spokesman, said in a statement. "This cannot be substituted by any IT application."
Confession: A Roman Catholic app walks Catholics through the sacrament. It also keeps track of your sins and the time between confessions, information it keeps locked away via password protection.
Created for "those who frequent the sacrament and those who wish to return," the Indianapolis-based developers Little iApps says the Confession was meant to be used while in the confessional, but not as a replacement for it.
"This app invites Catholics to prayerfully prepare for and participate in the Rite of Penance," it said in a press release.
The company claims the app received an "imprimatur" from Bishop Kevin C. Rhodesof the Diocese of Fort Wayne, suggesting it was approved by the Catholic Church.

Digital Nation: 90% of Americans own computerized devices like the iPad, iPhone, Android, Kindle

Does it feel like nearly everyone around you owns a cell phone? That might be because nearly everyone does. Nearly 90% of Americans now own at least one computerized device, CNN reports. According to a new study from the Pew Internet and American Life Project, an overwhelming majority of Americans own computerized gadgets such as cell phones, computers, MP3 players, game consoles, e-readers or tablet computers. The report, Generations and Their Gadgets, investigates the different ways in which six generations of Americans use technology.

The cell phone is America's most popular computerized device - 85% of Americans reportedly use cell phones. As of June 2010, 25% of American households had reportedly disconnected their land lines and now rely solely on mobile communication. Americans aged 18 to 34 are checking their email or play games on their phones - according to CNN, 30% of Americans reportedly own a smartphone, with the majority of these owners belonging to the "millenial" generation.

These millenials are also more likely to own a laptop than they are to own a desktop computer, and 75% of Americans age 18 to 34 own an MP3 player, according to the report.Tablets and e-readers are less popular with all age groups surveyed - only 5% of Americans reportedly own a tablet computer, and another 5% of people own an e-reader such as the Kindle or the Nook.
